As we work through the church year, it is well to remember that the church year has two main parts. From Advent to Easter, our readings and worship focus on the Life and Deeds of Jesus Christ our Savior. After Easter, our readings and worship focus on the Life of the Church.
The first half of the Church Year has three seasons
1) The time of preparation called Advent (which occurs in December)
2) Christmas itself when we celebrate the Son of God becoming human, and
3) Epiphany when we celebrate the revelation of the God-man Christ Jesus to the world.
After Epiphany comes Lent. Lent is a period of repentant preparation for the celebration of Easter that was begun not very long after the first Easter almost two thousand years ago. The duration of Lent is 40 days, reminiscent of the 40 days of rain in Noah’s flood (Genesis 7), the Israelites’ 40 years of wandering in the desert (Numbers 14), and the 40 days of Jesus’ temptation in the wilderness (Matthew 4).
Lent begins, however, 46 days before Easter, not 40. That’s because the Sundays during this time are not included, since Jesus rose from the dead on a Sunday and so that day is always a day of celebration. The first day of Lent is called Ash Wednesday, for the practice dating back to the Old Testament of covering one’s self with ashes as a sign of remorse and repentance.
The Second half of the Church Year begins 50 days after Easter and is called ‘Pentecost‘. Pentecost draws our attention to the Life of the Church – which is given to us by Jesus Christ. Pentecost continues until the end of the church year in late November, when we begin the church year again with Advent.
